BBC Wales Factual and Music department produces a range of programmes for both local and Network TV including the flagship consumer programme X-Ray, BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, Last Chance To See, Museum of Life and Between Life and Death.

As a Researcher you will unearth programme items using your investigative research skills and provide accurate research for both hard hitting and lighter pieces. You will often be working under pressure to meet transmission deadlines and need the ability to work across a number of stories simultaneously. A keen interest in consumer journalism is essential as well as an understanding of the relevant editorial and legal issues. You will be enthusiastic, diplomatic and self-motivated with communication/people skills being key. Journalistic experience is essential. Self-shooting skills are desirable.

The role

This person will provide commentary and analysis on the European leveraged loan primary and secondary markets, as well as oversee the development of LCD's London based business.  As a journalist, this person will write/collaborate on stories that will provide a critical set of benchmarking and structuring tools for market players to use as empirical underpinning for discussions with issuers, equity sponsors, and investors. As a manager, this person will help to oversee the growth and development of LCD's London based business, including managing other LCD employees, developing processes to ensure accurate and timely delivery of product to the market and directing business development. 

  • Work with LCD's London staff to build out the business of providing news and research to the European leveraged loan market.  This includes executing new business plans, identifying new business opportunities and overseeing the day to day operations of the London staff.
  • This person will interview major players in the field, including bankers, representatives of business, government, and academia. In addition to heavy telephone contact during business hours, this job includes extensive market contact representing S&P at conferences, and in source meetings both during office hours and in the evenings.           
  • Write/collaborate on from five to seven stories a day about the European leveraged loan market, write a daily commentary about activity in the European loan market, and write a weekly commentary covering the European loan market of at least 1,000 words weekly.
  • Work with the over reporters covering the loan market to develop and expand LCD's business of providing real time news coverage of the European leveraged loan market.  This includes coordinating coverage of the loan market on a daily basis by identifying and prioritizing key stories for the group, as well overseeing development of a system to track relevant dates in a transaction's time line to ensure that reporting is timely and accurate.
  • Utilize the information they have learned in order to represent S&P as a subject matter expert to the general press, giving interviews and placing relevant data at other publications, raising S&P's profile. This may include writing and placing feature stories with third party outlets.      

Qualifications

  • Experience in reporting on the European leveraged loan market
  • Strong technical writing skills necessary to keep up with the basic requirements of being a journalist.  
  • The ability to work with financial data is necessary to process the types of information that LCD handles on a daily basis.
  • Experience with developing and managing news desk business processes. 
  • Experience with training and managing other journalists. 
  • Excellent verbal & written communications skills are necessary to ensure that not only is the writing produced clear and concise, but that all interactions with the market, including interviews, are as effective as possible.
  • The ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment is necessary because daily and weekly production of LCD news products is very much a team effort.
  • Excellent social networking skills are necessary because of the significant dependence upon interaction with market players.

  • capable of multi-tasking, able to work under pressure to tight deadlines, and willing to work outside normal working hours if required;
  • a team player able to manage a range of internal relationships, but equally confident working under own initiative.
He or she will have:
  • excellent proof-reading and communications skills in spoken and written English
  • a proven ability to write for a variety of different audiences, including some research-based writing.
  • a good understanding of the different requirements of online and print communications
  • good IT skills and comfortable with learning new software
  • an interest in environmental issues
