Matt Mullenweg wondered out loud some time ago why more people who can design themes don't release freely-available themes.

People, in other words, like me. "Why don't you release free skins and grab yourself some karmic brownie points?", he was asking me.

Serendipity

In the course of my new regular employment I had cause to mock up a few designs for a client last month. And if you do two such mockups for a client, the one thing that's 100% certain in life is that you'll be left with at least one design which you liked and which won't ever see the light of day.

Maybe I'll knock it up and release it for free on Drupal.org, I thought.

Introducing "Fern"

It's called 'Fern' because it's got fern leaves in it. It's a free theme, released for your enjoyment only, which works with Drupal 4.7.

It's a fixed-width CSS-based design which, for its column layout, uses the unaltered output of Alex Robinson's 'One True Layout' interactive demonstrator. How convenient is that?

It looks like this:

You can get it from this page on Drupal.org, initially through CVS but by tomorrow the Drupal packaging system will have added a nice tarball download for you.

Share and enjoy.
